Insurance:

Additional fees:

The kids have left the nest (or, alternatively, out of economic necessity) and it’s time to downsize

2. You’ve outgrown your home and are looking for something a bit more palatial.

In either case, moving from a large home is a daunting task and raises questions such as: How expensive is this going to be? What do I do with all the stuff we’ve accumulated over the years? Where do I even begin?

If you’re in a 4 bedroom home, you probably haven’t had recent experience in the art of moving, so here are 4 helpful tips that will help you maintain your sanity during the big move!

1. Get Rid of Stuff You Don't Need!
We can shout this from the rooftops -- but it’s easier said than done. You’ve got a Mount Everest sized pile of needless things that have accumulated over the years and it’s easy to wax nostalgic as you begin dragging them out of the garage or attic. You may have that “awwww” moment as you see your high school pom poms from your cheerleading days...but, honey, it’s time to toss those babies. If you must, take the proverbial picture! Remember, if you haven’t seen it for years, you’re not going to miss it!

Here are some suggestions on how to get rid of the needless things once you’ve become emotionally detached:

Sort everything into 3 groups -- those that go into the dumpster, those that can be listed and sold, and those things that can be donated!

Now -- get rid of the things that can clear space most immediately. That means dumping the items in the dumping pile and calling the Salvation Army to collect the goods that you’re donating -- including large appliances or furniture (or those items that you don’t want to sell on Craigslist). That leaves you with one pile -- the selling pile. Get those items photographed and listed and then move them out of the way to leave you with more room to stage your move. What just happened here? You’ve made money not only from the items sold, but on the move itself! A no-brainer, right?

2. Label Moving Boxes

Label, label, label! Moving out of a 4 bedroom house is not a walk in the park. In fact, it can more often feel more like a walk in the zoo to be sure. Sometimes when you have spare money or zero free time you can let the movers deal with the packing. However, if you are packing by yourself and don't want to spend a whole month digging in boxes searching for your beloved Peppa Pig socks you`d better know what's in them. Mark each box in large letters with the room they belong in - kitchen, bathroom, bedroom 1, bedroom 2, et al. You can even itemize the contents of each box to further simplify the move (his clothes, her clothes, linens) under the heading of each room.

Now, many so called experts will come and tell you that you need to use colorful stickers, write on it with a sharpie, make triangular shaped holes, number them, barcode them, teach them how to talk and what not.. but the truth is, it doesn’t need to be that complicated.

Use dish boxes and pack all your dishes and kitchen items in boxes known as china boxes or “Large” boxes. They are typically around 5 CF in size or 18X18X24 in inches.

Don't put yourself in the estimator`s shoes and let a pro do the job.

Be as transparent as possible and present the estimator with anything that might go in order to avoid of extra charges when you are not ready for it. Don't try to underestimate the number of boxes that will come out of your closets because numbers don't lie and the truth always reveals itself. In this case, in the form of extra money.

4. Load Balancing

You should know that moving out of a 4 bedroom house takes time. It's not a 4 hour thing, neither is it 5 hours, and in most cases not even 6. Count on at least an entire day, if not longer, with a minimum of 4 movers, or more typically, 5 to 7 movers. Add driving time to the destination and keep in mind that it can sometimes be through heavy traffic. Add in lunch breaks, and then, only then, can you factor in the loading and unloading time.

If you're fortunate to have the movers packing for you and you move out of a full or a fairly full 4 bedroom house, it is highly recommended to split the move to 2 days. Squeezing it to one day may be over the limits for both you and the crew.

A Certificate of Insurance (COI) is often required by the management of a building or a managed development or a complex. The COI is provided by the moving company through their insurance company. Is My Move Covered if I Have Homeowners / Renters Insurance?

The answer to that is - sometimes. You'll need to call your insurance provider and ask.

Labor time: A major factor in your moving cost -- It is counted from the minute that the movers arrive at the pickup address until they say goodbye at the delivery address. The labor time includes the driving time between the pickup and the destination.

Travel time: Travel time is one of the bigger factors of your moving cost as well. Travel time is the time that it takes the moving company to get to you and return to their business with the trucks. 4. Load Balancing

You should know that moving out of a 4 bedroom house takes time. It's not a 4 hour thing, neither is it 5 hours, and in most cases not even 6. A Moving Company Can NOT Sell You an Insurance Policy

What Coverage Can a Moving Company Offer?

A Certificate of Insurance (COI) is often required by the management of a building or a managed development or a complex. The COI is provided by the moving company through their insurance company. It protects the building and the tenant against physical damage to the property as a result of the movers activity. It does not cover damages to the articles that are being moved.

Is My Move Covered if I Have Homeowners / Renters Insurance?

The answer to that is - sometimes. You'll need to call your insurance provider and ask.

In many cases the insurance will include some partial coverage but will not offer full coverage or any coverage for damages done by movers or an unprofessional labor. While it does cover your personal items, the loss has to be related to a peril that’s listed in your policy like fire and theft. Not here. Not today! We’re going to share some moving secrets with you and tell you directly how much a move should cost in New York and New Jersey for different size apartments and houses. We'll review different variables that can add to the cost of a move…..and reveal some little known moving secrets that moving companies don’t tell you!


Local move pricing:

A price for a local residential move is determined by a few major and a few minor factors.

Moving companies for studio apartments to a 4-bedroom house typically use crews that range from 2 movers and 1 truck to 6 movers and 2 moving trucks.

Major factors of your price:

Labor time: A major factor in your moving cost -- It is counted from the minute that the movers arrive at the pickup address until they say goodbye at the delivery address. The labor time includes the driving time between the pickup and the destination.

Travel time: Travel time is one of the bigger factors of your moving cost as well. Travel time is the time that it takes the moving company to get to you and return to their business with the trucks. It is not the time that it takes to get from the pickup to the delivery address -- that’s part of the labor time calculation. Most companies will charge 1 hour travel as a minimum on every job even it it takes less than an hour to get to and from the client. Hint: be sure to find movers in your zip code.

How does a flat rate work?

A flat rate given by the mover can be the estimated hourly rate + materials from the hourly contract example above - that the mover locks.
